St. Ambrose

1702
Collegiate Basilica of Stift Sankt Florian
St. Florian, Austria

This is part of a set in the choir stalls picturing the four Doctors of the Church. Unlike the other statues, this one does not give the saint an identifying attribute such as his flail or beehive. The book references St. Ambrose's study of the scriptures and his many influential writings, but books are very common in images of saints. The mitre, crozier, and cope are also nearly universal in images of bishops.
